Las Vegas Raiders add former Delmar athlete Alex Ellis to NFL roster
Alex Ellis has found his new home in the National Football League.
The former Delmar athlete inked a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Ellis signed with the New England Patriots prior to the start of the 2020 season but was released just five days later.
He did not record a snap with an NFL team in last year's regular season.
Ellis, 28, is considered an NFL journeyman, suiting up for seven organizations since 2016. He's had stints with the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles and Patriots prior to joining the Raiders.
A tight end, the Delmar grad joins a crowded Raiders' group which features one of the position's best; Darren Waller. Others like Foster Moreau, Derek Carrier, Nick Bowers, Matt Bushman and Carson Williams are also on the depth chart.
Ellis saw one of his more productive seasons in 2019 with the Eagles. He took the field for three games and was used primarily as a blocker. Ellis recorded three catches and a touchdown during the preseason.
Suiting up for the University of Tennessee, Ellis went undrafted out of college. He signed as a free agent in 2016 with the Titans, but was cut before the start of the regular season.
He was then picked up by the Jaguars, where he logged three receptions for 11 yards in six games. He was waived the following season and signed to the New Orleans' practice squad.
Ellis didn’t see game action again until 2018 as a member of the Chiefs.
Following a solid preseason in which the tight end caught 10 passes for 93 yards, Ellis earned a spot on the active roster and suited up for two games. He was placed on injured reserved nearly a month after the start of the regular season.
He signed with the Eagles in 2019, recording his first career touchdown in a preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. Ellis spent the bulk of the season on the injury list or practice squad before he was officially waived in July 2020.
Ellis helped Delmar to a state championship in 2009 as the team's quarterback.
He is not the only former Wildcat to suit up in the NFL. Shane Leatherbury, who recently finished his college career at Towson University, signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in April 2020.
The wide receiver was later released and signed with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League in December.
