No. 5 Salesianum defeated No. 4 Middletown, 49-25, Friday night to advance to the Division I Football Semifinals.
After a back-and-forth first half, Salesianum took control in the second half and never looked back, shocking the Cavaliers who had defeated Sallies in the regular season 34-7.
In the first half, Salesianum recovered a Middletown fumble and later scored on a five-yard run by Andrew Watkins for 7-0 lead after the extra point kick.
The Cavaliers responded with a 22-yard TD pass from quarterback Drew Fry to Nick Johnston to tie the score after the extra-point kick.
After a Salesianum fumble, the Cavs took a 13-7 lead on a 22-yard touchdown run by Najair Smith.
Sallies surged ahead 14-13 on a 50-yard run by Watkins and the extra-point kick.
Middletown retook the lead 19-14 on a touchdown pass from Fry to Esaias Guthrie.
With under a minute left in the second quarter, Salesianum intercepted a pass and later scored on a one-yard run by Watkins for a 21-19 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, Salesianum scored when quarterback Gabrielle Puzzangara found Sean Ragan for a 22-yard touchdown completion to go up by nine, 28-19.
Salesianum added two more sores in the third, a 10-yard Jesse Wheatley rushing score and another touchdown pass from Puzzangara, who hooked up with Cole Mettenheimer for a 31-yard touchdown.
On the next Middletown possession, the Cavs fumbled deep in their own end, leading to five-yard TD from Watkins, putting Salesianum up 49-19.
Fry threw a touchdown pass to Trey Griffin for the final score for Middletown.
With the win Salesianum earns a semifinal matchup next Saturday, Nov. 24 at No. 1 Hodgson at 11 a.m .
