Sen. Tom Carper spoke to the American Traffic Safety Services Association legislative briefing and fly-in on May 1, one day after a White House meeting with President Donald Trump and congressional leaders on a path forward on infrastructure legislation.
In his remarks, Carper talked about the road ahead for infrastructure legislation and emphasized the importance of including measures that would improve transportation safety.
“One of the first and foremost areas of agreement out of yesterday’s White House meeting was that the need for investments to make infrastructure improvements is great,” said Carper. “Too many people in this country are traveling on dilapidated roads, highways, bridges and transit systems that have been in use far beyond the duration of their original design. The sad truth is that roadway fatalities have remained persistently high — in 2017, more than 37,000 motorists in America died. As we work together on a bipartisan surface transportation reauthorization, it’s incumbent on us to keep transportation safety in mind.”
