Tiffany Reeves, 37, of Smyrna
A 37-year-old female inmate died early Monday morning at Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown.
Tiffany Reeves, of Smyrna, had been held on $1,202 bond since Friday, October 5, on charges related to unpaid court fines, according to court records. She was pronounced dead at 6:12 a.m. on Monday, October 8, just a few hours before she was due at Kent County Family Court.
The Department of Correction said that her next of kin has been notified and foul play is not suspected. Reeves’ body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science. A cause of death has not been released.
Kathleen MacRae, Executive Director of the ACLU of Delaware, issued a statement on Reeves’ death on Tuesday.
“Putting people in prison because they cannot afford to pay fines is wrong and unconstitutional. Setting a high cash bail for such people defies logic. We must end these practices and stop the tragedies they cause.”
