More than 62 entries of home-brewed beer will compete for top honors July 21 as part of the eighth annual Battle of the Brews at the Delaware State Fair, held at the Delaware State Fairgrounds, 18500 S. Dupont Highway, Harrington.

Judging will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m. Awards will be announced at 6:15 p.m. on stage at the M&T Bank Grandstand.

The public can taste beers from local breweries from 6 to 8:15 p.m.

Winners will be selected in 21 styles, or categories, with the top beer of each style competing for Best of Show. The champion will receive a $100 cash prize. Styles include lagers, pilsner, bock, hybrids, ales, porter and stout, among other categories. In addition, entrants from the eight categories that are brewed with Delaware grown or made ingredients will be evaluated for "Best Delaware Beer." To qualify for this, the beer must contain at least 15 percent fermentables grown or malted in Delaware, or must contain hops, fruit, vegetables or another unfermentable flavoring grown in Delaware.

Most contestants are from Delaware, with a few from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Twenty-one home-brewing enthusiasts and three grand master judges will be run and judge the competition.
