New Castle County Police reported Friday that the girl who was abducted from a Pike Creek apartment complex was sexually assaulted.
Police are still searching for the suspect.
On Thursday, April 6, around 7 p.m., county police were dispatched to the 4800 block of Sugar Plum Court for a report of a child abduction that had just occurred.
Witnesses saw a 4-year-old girl playing outside when she was approached by a suspect described as a white male with dark hair driving a dark-colored sedan with tinted windows. The suspect took the girl to his vehicle and fled, police said.
Officers searched the area until about 8:45 p.m. when a passerby located the child in the area of Banning Park.
The girl was taken by ambulance to A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children for treatment and evaluation.
Police said that during the evaluation, investigators discovered evidence of a sexual assault. The child was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries and reunited with her family.
Police conducted a thorough search of the area, receiving assistance from multiple agencies including the Delaware State Police and the FBI.
During a press conference Friday, county police detectives said they worked the case through the night searching for evidence and video surveillance.
Detectives are continuing their investigation into this incident and are canvassing the area and searching for additional surveillance video.
