National finals in Florida this August

On Sunday, April 3, the Miss DE Outstanding Teen pageant held its 2016 state finals for the New Castle County competition.

Jhilmil Pandit, Miss Hockessin Outstanding Teen, placed second runner up. Regional director Shawna Wainright said that Pandit impressed the judges with both her talent (a Bollywood dance exhibition), her scholastic achievements, and her platform "Education for Minorities, a Gift of a Lifetime."

Pandit is a ninth grade student at the Charter School of Wilmington.

Cassidy Sullivan, a 16 year old junior at Cab Calloway of the Arts, placed third runner up, according to Wainright.

Sullivan performed a contemporary Pointe dance and promoted her platform, "Creating Confidence through Creativity," Wainright said.

The overall Miss DE Outstanding Teen winner is Ashley Swanson, a 17 year old student at Charter School of Wilmington.

Swanson won overall talent by performing speed painting in 90 seconds. Swanson's platform is "Encouraging Young Women to Pursue STEAM Careers," according to Wainright.  Swanson will continue her reign and compete at the National competition in Orlando, Fla. in August.

Downstate winners include fourth runner up Willow Bowen, who sang "My Favorite Things" from "The Sound of Music" and shared her platform, "Celebrate Sound - Hearing Health."

First runner up was Sammi Ponsell, performing an acrobatic-dance. She also strongly promoted her platform, "Making Miracles Volunteer Network."
