Celebration Saturday and Sunday includes ice cream, food from local restaurants, craft beers, music for adults and children, and the new Food Network show, “Food Fest Nation,” covering the “Best Sundae on Sunday” contest.

The Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival at Rockford Park returns Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29 with a fun-filled menu featuring America’s favorite dessert, ice cream.

The cherry on top will be a visit by the new Food Network show, “Food Fest Nation,” covering the “Best Sundae on Sunday” contest June 29. Nine dairies and creators of ice cream treats from in and near Delaware will put their best to the test for host Anthony Anderson.

Participating in the contest will be HyPoint Dairy, Kilby Cream, UDairy Creamery, Caffe Gelato, the Ice Cream Shop, Sweet Lucy’s, Palateria y Neuvaria Tocumbo, Cajun Sno and Vanderwende Dairy.

A team of professional cooks and food critics will judge the entries for presentation, imagination and taste sensation. Besides earning a year’s worth of bragging rights, the winner will receive free vendor space at next year’s festival.

“The Ice Cream Festival is a great tradition at Rockwood and it offers an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful county park,” said New Castle County Executive Thomas P. Gordon. “We believe as many as 80,000 people could attend as the word gets out that this festival has been restored.”

New Castle County and Barry’s Events are cosponsoring the festival, which event producer Barry Schlecker calls “Delaware’s largest family picnic.”
