Senior Elena Power scored the game-winning goal to help lift the Lightning over Roberts Wesleyan today at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington.
Senior Elena Power (Glassboro, NJ) scored the winning goal in the 80th minute for Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team in a 3-2 victory over Roberts Wesleyan today at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington.
The Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks cracked the scoreboard first in the 18th minute when Israela Groves took a feed from Taylor Rutland and put home a 15-yard shot.
Goldey-Beacom freshman Taylor Owen (East Pennsboro, PA) netted the equalizer for the Lightning in the 50th minute with her first collegiate goal, converting a 15-yard shot off a pass from senior Amy Runciman (Luton, England).
Roberts Wesleyan regained the lead, 2-1, in the 71st minute with Fletcher burying a 25-yard free kick inside the left post.
But the Lightning tied it in the 78th minute, starting when freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) was hauled down in the box that led to a penalty kick. Runciman has been called on many times to convert from the spot and did just that, finding the back of the net for the fifth time in her career to forge a 2-2 tie.
Runciman is fifth in school history with 20 goals, second with 26 assists and fourth with 66 points.
Power then came through in the 80th minute to give the Lightning its first lead. Owen put a ball into the box that Power was right on the doorstop for and tallied for the final.
Speaks had five shots, Owen amassed four and junior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) made four saves for the Lightning (2-0).
Groves and Orla Martin totaled three shots each with Kelsey Brinkel recording seven saves for the Redhawks (1-2).
Goldey-Beacom's next game is on the road Wednesday at East Stroudsburg (PA) at 7 p.m.
