Dover native Madison Brengle upset the No. 2 ranked women’s singles player in the world Serena Williams in the second round of the 2017 Auckland Open ASB Classic on Wednesday in Auckland, New Zealand.

Brengle knocked out the tournament’s top overall seed, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 to advance to the ASB semifinals Thursday night.

Williams and Brengle had met one time before back in 2015, a victory for Williams (6-0, 6-1).

For Brengle, this is her third career win over a top 10 ranked opponent, having earned two victories over Petra Kvitova. Brengle’s first victory over Kvitova, then ranked No. 4, came at the 2015 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix before another victory the following year against a No. 8 ranked Kvitova at the 2016 Dubai Tennis Championships.

The 26-year-old Brengle will take on 19-year-old No. 7 seed from Latvia, Jelena Ostapenko Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. EST.
