- At the beginning of the school year, Carrcroft Elementary School Librarian Clarence Smith set a reading goal of 100,000 pages for the Carrcroft community. Principal Carol Norman raised the stakes of the read-a-thon by setting an incentive for the readers. Students were able to vote for what they wanted to see Mrs. Norman do if they reached the goal of 100,000 pages: do the chicken dance, mow the grounds of the school, or work for the day on the roof. 100,000 pages and an overwhelming vote for the roof later, Mrs. Norman is making good on her promise. On Thursday, May 17, Mrs. Norman spent the entire day on the roof of the school, equipped with her laptop and cell phone so that she can conduct business as usual. With the help of the Brandywine Fire Company and with all 493 students watching, Mrs. Norman climed onto the roof, where she remained until dismissal at 3:35 p.m.
