Bus passengers -- all from Appoquinimink High School -- weren't injured, but the bus driver and two people in the car were taken to Christiana Hospital, Delaware State Police said.

The Delaware State Police are investigating a collision involving a school bus carrying Appoquinimink High School students this morning, Sept. 5, near Bear.

The incident happened at the intersection of southbound Route 896 and Brennan Boulevard at about 6:58 a.m.

A 2006 Nissan Sentra, driven by a 17-year-old boy from Newark, was traveling south on Route 896 in the left lane approaching the intersection with Brennan Boulevard.

A 2013 International school bus, driven by a 44-year-old Townsend woman, was stopped in the Route 896 southbound left turn lane at the intersection of Brennan Boulevard.

The bus changed from the left turn lane into the left through lane, pulling into the path of the Nissan, police said.

The driver of the Nissan applied his brakes and attempted to veer right to avoid the bus but couldn't. The left front of his car struck the right front side of the bus. Both vehicles stopped in the Route 896 southbound lanes of travel.

The bus driver was taken to Christiana Hospital with minor injuries.

The students on the bus weren't injured, police said. The students are all from Appoquinimink High School.

The driver of the Nissan along with a 17-year-old passenger were taken to Christiana Hospital for evaluation.

The driver of the bus was cited for an improper lane change, police said.

The Appoquinimink School District reported that a school district response team was at the site within minutes after receiving the report of the collision. There were no reports of Appoquinimink High School student injuries, so a new bus was dispatched, and the students were transferred to that vehicle.

Parents were promptly notified by the district's transportation office. Upon arrival at school, the 19 students who were passengers on the bus were evaluated by the nurse, who subsequently cleared them to report to class, according to the school district report.

The bus driver, a contractor, was taken to the hospital.

Delaware State Police said Route 896 southbound was closed for about an hour while the scene was investigated and cleared.
