A box truck hit three cars, one of which burst into flames, Tuesday near New Castle. Delaware State Police have identified the Townsend man who died.

UPDATE, July 12:

Delaware State Police have released the name of the Townsend man who died in Tuesday's collision near New Castle on U.S. Route 13 near Red Lion Road.

Eugene T. Downward Jr., 53, died after a box truck hit his car that was stopped at a red light and then his car caught fire.

This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

ORIGINAL REPORT, July 11:

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a four-vehicle collision in which a Townsend man died Tuesday.

The initial investigation has determined that at about 11 a.m., a 2003 Dodge Neon and a 2012 Nissan Frontier were stopped on U.S. 13 northbound at the red light at the Red Lion Road intersection.

The Nissan was in front of the Dodge in the right lane.

A 2008 Hyundai Tiburon was disabled on the right shoulder near the Nissan and Dodge.

A 2016 Hino box truck was traveling north on U.S. 13 approaching the intersection, failed to stop, and ran into the Dodge.

The Dodge was pushed in a northwest direction, spun, and caught fire. It was fully engulfed in flames upon stopping north of the intersection.

The driver of the Dodge, a 53-year-old Townsend man, was unable to escape the fire and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The box truck continued moving north and struck the rear of the Nissan, pushing the Nissan through the intersection where it overturned before stopping in the median.

While striking the Nissan, the box truck also hit the Hyundai which was disabled on the shoulder.

After multiple impacts, the box truck continued traveling north before stopping on the northbound shoulder of U.S. 13.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 71-year-old Middletown man, was still in the driver’s seat attempting to start the vehicle. He suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated and released from the Christiana Hospital.

The driver of the Nissan, also a 71-year-old Middletown man, was wearing a seatbelt and suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was treated and released from the Christiana Hospital.

The driver of the box truck, Harold Holloway Jr., 62, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from the Christiana Hospital.

Holloway was charged with operation of a vehicle causing the death of another person and inattentive driving, police said. He is awaiting arraignment.

The front seat passenger in the box truck, 57-year-old woman from Bridgeport, Connecticut, was wearing a seatbelt and suffered non-life threatening injuries. She was treated and released from the Christiana Hospital.

U.S. 13 at the intersection of Red Lion Road was closed in both directions for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
