State police responded to a report of a domestic assault with a possibly armed man at a home on Blackbird Station Road

Delaware State Police responded to a home between Townsend and Smyrna today for a report of a possibly armed barricaded suspect.

At about 11:07 a.m., troopers were called to a home on Blackbird Station Road for a report of a domestic assault with an unstable man in the house.

The victim, a 69-year-old Townsend woman, was assaulted by her adult son, police said. The victim was found outside of her residence by a neighbor who called 911.

The suspect went back into the residence and refused to surrender.

At 12:15 p.m., the 23-year-old man surrendered and was taken into custody upon exiting the home. He has been taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.

The victim was flown by a state police helicopter to a hospital where she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives continue to investigate this incident and charges will be announced.

Blackbird Station Road is still closed as of 1:51 p.m., when the state police report was released.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
