Agency says no change to swimsuit competition following Miss America Organization's announcement
The Miss Delaware Scholarship Organization has announced that the Miss Delaware Outstanding Teen and the Miss Delaware competitions will be held Saturday, Friday, June 15 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, June 16, respectively, 7 p.m. at Cape Henlopen High School. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
Earlier this week, MDSO co-executive directors Tracey Eng and George Lee issued a statement following the Miss American Organization’s announcement that the swimsuit portion of the competition will be dropped beginning in September with Miss America 2019, saying there would be no changes to the scoring portion of the Miss Delaware pageant.
“Any changes that occur will begin at the Miss America Pageant in September,” Lee said.
Earlier this week, Miss America board of directors chairwomen Gretchen Carlson announced on "Good Morning America" that the event will no longer feature a swimsuit portion and would be a “competition” instead of a traditional pageant, according to CNN.
“We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That's huge,” Carlson said.
The MAO announcement indicated that there will also be no changes to the lifestyle portion of competition for Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, which takes place in Orlando, Fla., on July 28.
Lee also expressed his excitement at this year’s panel of contestants.
“We are honored to be back to the beach for the 77th Annual Miss Delaware competition,” Lee said. “Our contestants have appeared at the Rehoboth Bandstand, and will be seen around Rehoboth and Lewes the week before the crowning of Miss Delaware 2018 on June 16.”
Contestants participate in five phases of competition. Each contestant will have a personal interview where they will be asked questions on a variety of topics like politics, current events, platform, and personality.
As part of the Miss America Organization each young women is required to have a personal platform that they advocate for throughout their year of service as well as the Children’s Miracle Network, the organizations national philanthropy.
Other phases of competition include on-stage question, lifestyle and fitness, talent, and evening gown.
The young woman who shines the brightest in all the categories will be crowned Miss Delaware 2018 and will compete at Miss America 2019 on Sept. 9, 2018 at Atlantic City, NJ.
Tickets can be purchased at the door of each event, or by visiting Miss Delaware website at missde.org/ or at the door on the evening of each competition.
