Annual hikes open state parks for free brief visits
Delaware State Parks offer free hikes at various state parks on Jan. 1.
Alapocas Run, 1914 W Park Dr, Wilmington, 10 a.m.
Start the New Year outside on a two-hour recreational hike. Dress for the weather (layers of clothing, winter shoes, hats and gloves) and bring drinking water. After the hike, come back for some hot drinks. Pre-registration required by noon on Wednesday, Dec. 27. In the case of inclement weather, call (302) 222-7436 on Jan. 1 for cancellation information.
Auburn Heights Preserve, 3000 Creek Rd, Yorklyn,1 p.m.
Join us for a new year and a new trail at Auburn Heights Preserve. Start the New Year off right by hiking the newest trail at Auburn Heights Preserve: the 1.6 mile Oversee Farm Trail. Learn more about the area and the future plans for Auburn Heights. Meet at the Oversee Farm Trail parking lot at 1516 Snuff Mill Rd.
Bellevue State Park, 800 Carr Rd, Wilmington, 1 p.m.
Kick off the year and have some fun while also getting exercise in nature. We'll pick a trail based on the group and walk for about an hour, visiting special places throughout the park. This hike is for all ages and is stroller-friendly. No pre-registration necessary. Meet at the Arts Center.
Auburn Heights Preserve (second hike)3000 Creek Rd., Yorklyn, 3:30 p.m.
Due to popular demand, we are offering a second First Day Hike at Auburn Heights Preserve. Join a park interpreter to hike the 1.3 mile paved Auburn Valley Trail. Meet at the Auburn Valley Trail parking lot on Farm Lane off of Benge Road.
