Petty Officer 1st Class Antonio Gonzalez, a 2002 Glasgow High School graduate and Newark native, received the 2017 Sailor of the Year award serving at Naval Facilities Engineering Command Hawaii, Pearl Harbor, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Facility.

Gonzalez, a Seabee builder currently serving for 15 years, works for the NAVFAC Public Works Department as a facility management specialist. He is versed in facilities maintenance, repair and construction; and assists the building manager with the generation and submission of service requests that are beyond routine, urgent or emergency.

He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service as minor construction project manager and leading petty officer, NAVFAC Hawaii, on Nov. 22, resulting in his selection as NAVFAC Pacific's 2017 Sailor of the Year.

He managed and scheduled over 200 minor projects valued at $2.6 million, enhancing safety, quality of life and mission readiness to 176 tenant commands in Navy Region Hawaii. As leading petty officer, he spearheaded the integration of military and civilian personnel in workshops, creating a cohesive and "can do" working environment that will benefit the Seabee Division and civilian workforce for years to come.
