Sen. Chris Coons, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement Aug. 11 in response to President Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding the expulsion of U.S. diplomats from Russia.
“In my visits to U.S. embassies overseas, I've been consistently impressed with the professionalism and dedication of our nonpartisan career foreign service officers. Our diplomats’ presence around the world promotes American values, ensures security and helps deter the proliferation of nuclear weapons — efforts that are vital in our world right now,” Coons said. “President Trump's comments thanking Russian President Vladimir Putin for expelling U.S. diplomats, whether sarcastic or not, are uncalled for and do not support our foreign service professionals. I look forward to the day that our president begins to carefully calibrate his statements and actions in world affairs.”
