The 2014 Delaware American Legion regular season has come to an end, and the R.C. duPont Post 18 Aviators have clinched the fifth seed in this year’s state tournament which begins Saturday morning.

Post 18 tallied a record of 15-12, earning 45 total points which was good enough to clinch the fifth overall seed in a seven-team double elimination playoff format. The Aviators draw the fourth seed Delvets Post 1 (15-11) in the opening round of the tournament Saturday morning at Schutte Park in Dover, Del. with first pitch scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

Delvets Post 1 clinched the fourth spot on Wednesday, the last day of the regular season, defeating Durney Post 27 8-1 in the continuation of a rain-shortened game from July 3.

R.C. duPont went winless in three meetings with Delvets Post 1 this season, falling 6-2, 7-3, and most recently 4-3 in a contest last Thursday.  The constant in each match up for Delvets Post 1 was strong pitching and timely hitting. In all three matchups Delvets Post 1 received strong outings on the mound from Mike Schell, Sean Deely, and John Harris. At the plate, Post 1 relied on clutch hits from Shayne Linkhorst and Timmy Parks to claim victories.

Though, for Post 18 their regular season match ups with Delvets Post are in the rear-view and all that’s important now is how they’re playing heading into the tournament.

“With the season just wrapping up, the most important thing down the stretch was getting all 18 of our players as many reps as possible, “said R.C. duPont Manager Michael Maczynski. “So, whenever someone is called upon they have been given the best chance to succeed.”

To be successful in the tournament Maczynski believes his squad simply has to play solid fundamental baseball and talent can take care of the rest.

“To be successful we’re going to need to play well in every aspect of the game, from solid pitching and defense to working good at bats and coming up with timely hitting,” said Maczynski.

The tournament will run from Saturday, July 26 through Thursday, July 31. Defending state champs Stahl Post 30 earned the number one seed and a first-round bye.  Two games will follow R.C. duPont/Delvets Post 1 on Saturday, starting with #6 Post 10 vs. #3 Fox Post 2 at 2:00 p.m., and #7 Durney Post vs. #2 Post 25 Middletown following at 6:00 p.m.

A Delaware American Legion Baseball Champion will be crowned on Thursday, July 31 and that team will move on to the American Legion Mid Atlantic Regional in Brooklawn, New Jersey starting on August 7.
