WHAT: American Legion Baseball – R.C. duPont (9-8) vs. Milford Post 3 (1-15) (Doubleheader)

      WHERE: Brandywine High School

      WHEN: Saturday – 12:00 p.m. (Game One), 3:00 p.m. (Game Two)

  • With just under two weeks remaining in the Delaware American Legion baseball season, the R.C. duPont Post 18 aviators find themselves in prime position to earn a spot in the state tournament.
Currently, Post 18 stands at 9-8 on the season good enough four fourth place in the 10-team league. Post 18 trails third-place Fox Post 2 from Dover by three games, while both second-place Middletown Post 25 (13-2) and first-place Stahl Post 30 (15-2) are sporting two-loss records.
After a weekend sweep of Fox Post 2 and Post 10 Generals, R.C. duPont had their winning streak snapped on Wednesday falling to Delaware Post 1 3-2.
Zach Roseman had a big day for Post 18 in the loss going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Austin Horstmeyer, Brett Hillsgrove, DJ Burns, and Brett Nordmeyer combined for five hits including a double and a triple, and three runs scored.
However, with Hillsgrove on the hill Post 18 couldn’t contain Delaware Post 1’s Joe Coyle and Richie Refner. Coyle finished the day 3-for-3 with a walk, a run, a stolen base, and a RBI, while Refner had two hits for Delaware Post 1 including a double and a run scored.
This weekend Post 18 hosts the struggling Post 3 club from Milford in an important doubleheader. While on paper R.C. duPont would seem to have the upper hand, they can ill afford a slip up as the three teams currently ahead of them also face off against teams with losing records.
As of Thursday afternoon, only Stahl Post 30, Middletown Post 25, Fox Post 2, Post 18, and the 7-5 Delaware Post 1 have winning records in Delaware American Legion Baseball. And while Post 18 isn’t in any immediate danger of missing the tournament,  the Post 10 Generals (7-9) and Delvets Post 1 (6-9) remain just one game behind Post 18 in the loss column with Delaware Post 1 lurking in the weeds with makeup games in hand.
A sweep of Milford this weekend could put the Aviators in a much better position heading into the final full week of play. Also, Post 18 will take on just two teams with a winning record the rest of the way in Post 25 from Middletown and current leader and defending champion Stahl Post 30. The rest of Post 18’s opponents have a combined record of 13-30.
