Nearly a third of the American Legion Baseball season has been played and the R.C. duPont Post 18 team finds themselves among the top half of teams in the state.

Post 18 is currently 5-4 after 6-3 win over the Post 6 Patriots down in Seaford, Del. on Wednesday. At 5-4, Post 18 is tied with Dover based Fox Post 2 (5-3) with 15 points earned. They trail second place Middletown Post 25 (9-1) (27 points), and first-place Stahl Post 30 (9-1) (27 points).

After dropping a match up with Stahl Post 30 in their previous match up, Post 18 bounced back Wednesday in their 6-3 decision over Post 6. Brett Hallsgrove was strong on the mound Wednesday, allowing three runs on just three hits, while DJ Burns led the way at the plate going 3-for-3 with three RBI in the victory.

While Post 18 still has a hill to climb to reach the top spot in the standings, manager Michael Maczynski is happy with how the team has progressed so far, even with some new faces joining the fold.

“The team is coming along nicely,” said Maczynski. “With every new year comes different players, not just for us but the entire league as a whole. Our team has a lot of new kids as well as some administrative changes on it this year, but our kids are for the most part familiar playing together.”

Post 18 has some important matchups coming up next week that could very well determine their fate this season. On Tuesday, they take on Durney Post 27 (1-6) (3 points) before a matchup with first-place Stahl Post 30 Thursday and a double-header against Fox Post 2 Saturday at Brandywine.

“Delaware American Legion baseball is very competitive with a lot of good teams,” said Maczynski. “And our biggest expectation is to have our kids go out there and play hard and as a coaching staff put them in the best situations for them to be successful that day and going forward.”
