  • Local bibliophiles know Hockessin Book Shelf owner Rebecca Dowling to be a passionate proponent of books, authors and everything remotely related. But, with the release of John Green’s book, “The Fault in Our Stars,” she’s seeing that passion in other people, too.
“The book resonates with both kids and adults,” Dowling said. “It’s one of the most-read books for book groups right now and if you’ve read any of Green’s work you know why. Green writes from a realistic view of teens. It’s not melodramatic at all. It’s just raw and real.”
The book’s immense popularity led to a movie deal when Fox 2000 purchased the film rights in 2012.The movie, also called “The Fault in Our Stars” stars “it” kids of the moment, Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort and opens today at movie theaters across the country.
“Like a lot of customers, we’re so excited to see this movie. But, we also thought this particular story would be a perfect fit for our ‘book to movie events’ that we started in December,” she said. “We expect to see a lot of nerdfighters.”
“Nerdfighter” is another John Green creation and one that teens are taking seriously. Dowling explained that the term is somewhat synonymous with modern freedom fighting, saying that “it’s nerds fighting for nerds. Their motto is to ‘increase awesome and decrease suck.’”
The book to movie event will feature lots of refreshments, “nerdfighter” trivia, quote games from the book and more.
“We also want to honor the theme of the book and raise awareness and funds for some of our local organizations that give support to teens dealing with cancer,” Dowling said.
The cost of the event is $15 and will also include a “swag bag” filled with book and movie-related goodies, including a pass to Regal Theater to see “The Fault in Our Stars” or any other movie currently showing.
Due to the book’s mature content and themes, the event will be open to adolescents who are at least 13 years old. Space is limited and early registration is recommended. For more information about the event, visit facebook.com/hockessinbookshelf. To register for the event, call (302) 235-7665.
