  • A new company has taken up residence in one of Delaware’s oldest Masonic mansions.
The Weston Group, Inc., a rehabilitation care provider based out of Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, has taken over the operation of Highfield Masonic Home of Delaware, located in the 4000 block of Lancaster Pike in Wilmington.
Rebranded the Weston Senior Living Center at Highfield Masonic Home of Delaware, the new company will continue to offer many of the same long and short-term healthcare options as the Masons, who had owned the building since 1911.
Built in 1842, the mansion now serves as offices for Weston as well as housing residents for its rehabilitation services, according to Executive Director Joyce Winters.
Winters said that when the Masons originally purchased the property 1911, the mansion was the only existing building; other wings were added over the years, starting with the healthcare wing in 1922 all the way up to the Bedford Room in 2000.
Winters said she enjoys having an office in so old a building, with many visitors asking her questions about its history.
“I get a lot of compliments when people come in, because the ceilings are really high and the windows are huge,” she said. “It’s just such a nice place.”
Winters said she is working to let people know that they do not have to be a Mason to receive care at the facility – a practice she said the Masons themselves stopped around eight years ago, when they opened the facility to the community.
“Now, as Weston, we’re not Masonic affiliated but we still provide the same services,” she said.
Weston offers services within the “continuing care retirement community” spectrum, Winters said, including speech, occupational and physical rehabilitation.
The facility now includes 31 “Rest residential” apartments that are similar to assisted living services, 20 independent living rental cottages and skilled healthcare housing for 25 post-hospital temporary care patients.
