Both Sanford and Wilmington Christian came out of the gates slow to start the boys’ lacrosse season. The two teams, both with the nickname Warriors, met on the lacrosse field Wednesday still working their way out of their early season struggles.
Sanford was able to ward off a late Wilmington Christian rally, led offensively by three goals apiece from juniors Jacob Emanuel and Jahni Love, winning 11-9.
Early on, the extremely windy conditions Wednesday didn’t seem to bother either team as the game kicked off with back-and-forth rushes on both ends of the field. Sanford struck first to open the scoring and took a slim one-goal lead, 4-3 after one quarter.
In the second, Sanford’s defense began to apply more pressure holding Wilmington Christian off the scoreboard while upping their lead by three to take a 7-3 advantage into the half.
After match one another in goals to open the second half, the teams entered the final stanza with Sanford leading 9-5. Wilmington Christian’s offense came hard in the fourth but weren’t able to complete the come-back despite scoring four goals in the final quarter.
Along with Emanuel and Love’s three goals apiece Wednesday, freshmen Spencer Green and sophomore David Dresser both added two goals apiece and Humphreys found the back of the net once to round out the Sanford scoring.
Senior Spencer Lockard and junior Alex Fowler did their best to match Emanuel and Love’s output Wednesday, scoring three goals apiece for Wilmington Christian in the losing effort.
Wilmington Christian had the edge in shots, 27-21, mostly due to their late come-back attempt in the fourth.
Both goalkeepers were solid on Wednesday, Sanford’s Erik Lundberg made 16 saves for the win, while Wilmington Christian’s Connor Lockard made nine saves.
The win for Sanford is their second in a row after a 1-5 start, while the loss for Wilmington Christian breaks a three-game winning streak.
Wilmington Christian will look to bounce back Tuesday when they travel to take on St. Thomas More (5-3) starting at 4:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, Sanford looks to increase their win-streak to three when they travel to take on Friends today at 4:00 p.m.
