Brigitte Best, 78, of Berlin, Md., pronounced dead at the scene

A head-on crash on Route 1 today left one woman dead and two men injured.

The crash occurred at 10:48 a.m. as Brigitte Best, 78, drove a 2008 Nissan Altima north on Route 1. She lost control of the vehicle on the wet and snowy roadway, and it traveled in a northwestwardly direction across the grass median and into the southbound lanes, where it collided with a 2002 Ford Express van.

Best, of Berlin, Md, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van, Leonardo Cruz, 25, of Elkton, Md, was transported by ambulance to Christiana Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. His passenger, Rene Vazquez, 42, of Elkton, Md, was also transported by ambulance to Christiana Hospital for treatments of non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of both vehicles were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Route 1 southbound was closed for approximately three hours as the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated and cleared the crash. The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.
