  • More than 30 area students from around New Castle County participated in the Sixth annual Spartan Speech Classic Feb. 1 at Saint Mark's High School.
    This contest allows students in elementary and middle schools to show off their public speaking skills, addressing the categories of declamation and oral interpretation.
    The winners in the following categories were as follows:
    Fifth and sixth grade declamation: 1st place, Tatum Schutt, Independence School; 2nd place, Emi Shannon, All Saints Catholic School; 3rd place, Gabriel Ortiz, Immaculate Conception School.
    Fifth and sixth grade oral interpretation: 1st place, Patrick Palm, Mount Aviat; 2nd place, Alyssa Jezyk, Immaculate Conception; 3rd place, Siani Costango, All Saints and Jessica Molen, Independence.
    Seventh and eighth grade declamation: 1st place, Annette Mubang, All Saints; 2nd place, Aidan O'Neill, Holy Angels; 3rd place, Kristina Keithley, Immaculate Conception.
    Seventh and eighth grade oral interpretation: 1st place, Kennedy Crowder, Independence; 2nd place, Jack Kuchma, St. Ann School; 3rd place, Sophia Summerill, All Saints.
    Team trophies awarded to: 1st place, All Saints School; 2nd place, Immaculate Conception School; 3rd place, St. Ann School.
