  • The American men's hockey team is heading to the quarterfinals in the Winter Olympics.
The U.S. team defeated Slovenia 5-1 on Sunday, with Phil Kessel scoring three of the goals and becoming the first U.S. player with a hat trick in the Olympics in more than a decade.
The victory gives the U.S. team an automatic spot in the quarterfinals, but the seeding will depend on the outcome of the game between Canada and Finland.
    Winter Olympics: Stars to watch
In women's snowboarding, American Lindsey Jacobellis - who's been plagued by misfortune at the past two Winter Olympics - again came up short, falling as she tried to navigate a pair of rollers towards the bottom of the course and never reaching the finish line as a result. She finished in seventh place, while Eva Samkova of the Czech Republic took gold.
Bode Miller tied for bronze with Canada's Jan Hudec in the men's Super-G Alpine skiing competition, making him the oldest Alpine skier to medal, at age 36. Kjetil Jansrud won the fourth straight gold medal for Norway, while American Andrew Weibrecht took silver.
2014 Sochi Olympics: The most memorable moments
American ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White put themselves in a great position to win Olympic gold, cruising to victory in Sunday's shorts program with a record score of 78.89 points. They're 2.5 points ahead of Canadian rivals and reigning Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir heading into Monday's competition.
In the men's cross-country relay, Sweden successfully defended its gold medal and became the first country in 42 years to capture the title of both the men's and women's team events in the same Games. With President Vladimir Putin looking on, Russia came in second place and France took bronze.
