The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office has determined that the Wednesday evening apartment building fire in Marshallton was accidental, caused by a child playing with a lighter.
A Wednesday evening apartment building fire in Marshallton, east of Pike Creek, displaced about 20 residents.
No injuries were reported, according to Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Robert L. Fox.
The residents are being assisted by The Red Cross of Delmarva and the apartment building management.
The Mill Creek Fire Company was alerted to the fire shortly after 6 p.m. in the 2100 block of Grafton Drive, in the Red Clay Creek community, just south of Kirkwood Highway and just west of Newport Gap Pike.
When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the apartment building, Fox said.
State fire investigators were called to the scene and conducted an investigation. The fire originated in a first floor bedroom and was caused by a juvenile playing with a lighter, Fox said.
Fire damage is estimated at $150,000.
