Mrs. Shirley W. Bounds, Principal of St. Elizabeth High School, has announced the appointment of Joseph Anthony Papili as Athletic Director. Papili, who is currently serving as U.S. Marshal for the District of Delaware, will officially begin his duties on April 7, 2014. He is taking over for Joe Hemphill who is retiring at the end of January.
Papili retired in August 2010 at the rank of Major after 25 years with the Delaware State Police and was appointed later that month as U.S. Marshal. Papili has nearly three decades of professional experience in supervisory capacities and senior leadership positions. Credited as an agent for change and problem-solving with a proven record of melding diverse groups into cohesive, effective teams while maintaining strong professional ethics, he has a strong background in financial management, strategic planning, operations, marketing, customer service, conflict management, integration and team building.
A 1979 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School where he was a four year varsity participant in football, basketball and baseball, Papili received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware in 1983. Mr. Papili is a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth Parish and has served previously as Treasurer of the St. Elizabeth High School Alumni Association and as a member of St. E advisory committees for operations and school development. He resides in Pike Creek with his wife Mary Ann and two children, Brittany and Caitlin, both of whom are St. E graduates and were active in sports at the high school and college levels.
"I am very anxious to get started at my new position and return to my roots at St. E, where the foundation of my career was developed. I am glad to have the opportunity to come back and carry on the great legacy of St. E,” Papili said. “I will strive to facilitate continued success in the academic, spiritual and athletic mission of the school through our athletic programs. St. E is a vital, strong, prospering school that has a lot to offer and I am thrilled to be able to be a part of its future.”
Principal Bounds sees the transition as a passing of the torch.
“St. Elizabeth High School has been blessed for the past four decades to have had Joe Hemphill, a graduate of both the elementary and high schools, as its athletic director. He transferred so capably the values he learned and lived as a student into his role as a leader and administrator at St. E that our student athletes found success on the court and field and in their adult life,” said Bounds. “The appointment of Joe Papili enables St. Elizabeth to continue this respected tradition into the future. We are St. Elizabeth – in hospitality, prayer, study, and service. Joe Papili exemplifies Benedictine Spirit and Viking Pride as did Joe Hemphill. Like Coach Hemphill, he is a product of both schools and a Viking athlete who was coached, directed and mentored by Coach Hemphill.”
“His background brings together a strong foundation built at St. Elizabeth with the richness of real world experience,” Bounds said. “Once again, St. Elizabeth is fortunate to have a dedicated community leader who will continue the legacy of competitive, successful teams and coaches who represent the St. Elizabeth Maroon & Gold with faith, sportsmanship and character.“
