  • While working for "Life" magazine in 1964, Richard Meryman met and befriended acclaimed artist Andrew Wyeth. Partly because Meryman is the son of a painter, the two found much to talk about over the years. So much so that, following Wyeth's death in 2009, Meryman found himself with 45 years of recorded interviews with Wyeth, his family, friends and models.
At 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, Meryman will discuss his memories of Wyeth and his new book, "Andrew Wyeth: A Spoken Self-Portrait" at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Penn. The book is set up as five skillfully crafted monologues around key themes in Wyeth's work. However, it's not just Wyeth's explanations. The voices of his subjects, neighbors, relatives and critics also help in painting a clearer picture of the scope and reach of Wyeth's work. The book also includes reproductions of the artwork discussed as well as previously unpublished photographs of Wyeth's studio taken in 2009.
Meryman's other books on Wyeth include the 1968 book of art "Andrew Wyeth" and the 1996 biography "Andrew Wyeth: A Secret Life." Copies of Meryman's books will be available in the museum shop following the presentation. Visitors are encouraged to have their copies signed as well. Due to time constraints, patrons will be limited to two signatures each.
The program is included with regular museum admission: $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and $6 for students and children. The Brandywine River Museum is located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Penn.
