Carousel Park Equestrian Center is known, or maybe not known, as a place to take horseback riding lessons.
According to Executive Assistant Steven Burg, it's "the best kept secret in this town."
He was on hand to guide members of the Pike Creek Valley Civic League through the organization of the new Friends of Carousel Park group, which the Civic League is co-sponsoring with the New Castle County administration. He said his role is as a mentor.
Patti Draper, who owns the charity Personal Ponies on the property, wants to have the Park serve the community.
She has big plans for the Park, including an amphitheater and busing of those in nursing homes out to the park for a day trip.
First, however, the original deeded trust of the property has to be found. Other things the Civic League is working on is convening a board of directors and getting its paperwork together to become classified as a nonprofit.
Burg is "confident" they will have their board. But, as of press time, the County Recorder of Deeds was looking for the trust.
It's not known what the trust says, but the property on Limestone Road has had several owners. It was owned by Thomas Springer, who built his Swedish Log House (seen at the Smithsonian) at or near where John Dickinson High School is and had a working farm on the Park property. Then, Felix and Mary DuPont owned the property and had their DuPont Pony Club.
The state of Delaware owned the property for a time until they turned it over to New Castle County. The county uses the Park currently for its Mounted Patrol Unit.
It seems to be showing support. The county is repairing and repainting barns on the property, and Draper is pleased with the results.
Meanwhile, a Sleep Under The Stars event, advertised on the county website, has been planned for this Saturday to increase community interest in the Park and to get volunteers for the Friends group.Camping, hayrides, bonfires, children's crafts, children's games and activities, food vendors, live entertainment, movies, and other activities will be planned for the event.
