Steve Bailey, Exec Director of The Grand, has an uncanny ability to identify emerging talent poised for prominence.  This prescience has meant we have witnessed stars such as Idina Menzel, Chris Botti, Norah Jones, The Avett Brothers, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Jake Shimabukuro, and Joe Bonamassa BEFORE they became performers on the international stage.

Director of Administration Christine Molino quips, "The irony is that many of them are so big now we can't afford to have them back!  The great thing, though, is that our guests at The Grand and the baby grand had memorable experiences and can rightly say, 'we saw them back when'".

Four acts on three separate nights beginning this weekend typify this next generation of performing stars.  All appear at the 300 seat intimacy of the baby grand; Wilmington's 'laboratory' of future talent. All are priced at very affordable rates.

AOIFE O’DONAVAN     Friday, October 4, 8:00PM    live @ the baby grand  $23

Mainly known for her work with the innovative bluegrass fusion band Crooked Still, accomplished singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan (pronounced “ee-fuh”) will make a debut appearance live at the baby grand. Boston-based alt-bluegrass O’Donovan is also a member of the female folk-noir trio, Sometymes Why. The stunning versatility and appeal of her voice brought her to the attention of some of the most eminent names in music and led to collaborations across a wide variety of genres with everyone from Alison Krauss to Dave Douglas, along with a role as vocalist on the Grammy-winning Goat Rodeo Sessions alongside Chris Thile, Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan.  Rolling Stone says O’Donovan’s 2013 debut album Fossils is a “must-listen blend of bluegrass, folk and back-porch Americana.”

LUCY WAINWRIGHT ROCHE & SUZZY ROCHE Saturday, October 5, 8:00PM     $25

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in a band with your mother? Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche, a mother daughter duo, have just released their first collaborative album - "Fairytale and Myth". Suzzy Roche is a founding member of The Roches and Lucy, who usually tours as a solo singer-songwriter has performed in Portsmouth at the Music Hall several times as an opening act. She also appeared at last year's singer-songwriter festival at the Loft. Suzzy and Lucy's show will features, songs, stories and lots of harmonies

HEY MARSEILLES and THE APACHE RELAY  Thursday, October 10, 8:00PM   $23

The Seattle-based ensemble Hey Marseilles first won hearts across the US with its 2010 debut, To Travels and Trunks, which NPR called “sublime and heartfelt.” Embracing folk tradition, gypsy, Euro-pop and classical, Hey Marseilles is an experienced band with a slew of major festivals (Bumbershoot, Sasquatch!) and a national tour under its belt.

Nashville indie-rockers The Apache Relay effortlessly blend acoustic sounds with ferocious rock anthem elements. Since the release of American Nomad, the band has toured non-stop, opened for Grammy nominated Mumford & Sons, and performed a breakout performance at Bonnaroo Music Festival. “They’ve got kind of an Arcade Fire meets boys raised on gospel and Bruce Springsteen approach to what they do...They’re a fantastic live band.” - Huffington Post

Asserts Molino, "We see these four groups as those who will be returning to The Grand main stage in the coming years. This is our mission at the baby grand."
