Get ready for some fast-paced and exciting college ice hockey when the University of Delaware men's ice hockey team skates into action this weekend.
The Blue Hens open the season this Friday night, Sept 20th, at the Fred Rust Ice Arena on the University of Delaware campus in Newark. Their first opponent will be the United States Naval Academy. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The game marks the return of the UD-Navy rivalry on the ice. The Hens and Midshipmen played for years until about four years ago when Navy changed their ice hockey program, but now the competition is renewed.
Delaware has upgraded its program since the arrival of head coach M.F. Schurman. The University now has teams in the Division-1, D-2 and D-3 levels in the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association), recognized as the highest level of collegiate club hockey in the United States.
This year's home opponents include West Chester University, Lebanon Valley, Rutgers, Rhode Island, Stony Brook and Liberty.
The Blue Hens won their first-ever National Championship two years ago. The ACHA National Championship Tournament will be played at the U of D in Newark, during the week of March 7, 2014.
