The House of William and Merry restaurant has joined the James Beard Foundation's "Taste America Local Dish Challenge" to benefit local and national non-profit groups.
The restaurant's owners and chefs, Bill Hoffman and Merry Catanuto, said they are proud to represent northern Delaware's impressive local food scene in this nationwide culinary event.
Chefs around the country were challenged to create dishes that showcase the best of their local food scene, as part of the foundation's "Taste America: Local Flavor From Coast-to-Coast" event.
For the challenge, Bill Hoffman will present "scallops and oysters," a dish with pan-seared Jersey scallops, local corn, butternut squash and oyster mushrooms with a white-truffle vinaigrette.
One dollar from every dish sold through Oct. 31 at the Hockessin restaurant will be donated to the James Beard Foundation Taste America Education Drive, which supports educational programs including the JBF Food Conference, the JBF Leadership Awards and the Chefs Boot Camp for Policy & Change.
Diners can help win $10,000 for Meals on Wheels Delaware
Diners should bring along their phones when they come to the House of William and Merry. Snapping a picture of "Scallops and Oysters," and posting it to Instagram with hashtags #JBFTasteamerica and #Hockessin, puts Meals on Wheels Delaware, the local nonprofit chosen by the restaurant's owners, in the running to win a donation of $10,000 or more from the James Beard Foundation.
More than 50 top restaurants from around country have joined the challenge, including Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Perry St in New York City, Jenn Louis' Lincoln in Portland and Nate Whiting's Tristan in Charleston.
"This event is a perfect opportunity to show off the beauty of our local harvest, and to bring attention to the James Beard Foundation and Meals on Wheels Delaware," said Bill Hoffman. "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence and passion."

About The House of William and Merry
Merry Catanuto and Bill Hoffman are the husband-and-wife team that own and operate The House of William and Merry at 1336 Old Lancaster Pike. Both are trained chefs – Merry at the San Francisco California Culinary Academy and Bill at the Philadelphia Culinary Arts and Design School.
Merry was a chef at La Pastaia in San Jose, California before returning to Delaware to help reopen the Deer Park Tavern in downtown Newark. Bill was the chef at the Green Room at the Hotel du Pont for five years and has worked at the Bistro on the Brandywine, the Columbus Inn, and the Eclipse Bistro.
In 2011, Bill and Merry purchased the 1922 Hockessin farmhouse that would become their home and restaurant. The interior of the original house and first floor were extensively renovated for the restaurant and kitchen, which seats 60 including two dining rooms, front porch, and bar.
