CHAPEL STREET PLAYERS - The 39 Steps

Celebrating their 79th season, Chapel Street stages Alfred Hitchcock's THE 39 STEPS. The movie premiered in 1935.  In 2008, however, this comic theatrical whodunit received six Tony nominations with two wins.

September 20 - 28

From November 8 - November 16. BLITHE SPIRIT, penned by the urbane and penultimate sophisticate Sir Noel Coward, this comic play was inspired by poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The play concerns the socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira, after the séance. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles's marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost.

WILMINGTON DRAMA LEAGUE - Avenue Q

Tony winner of the for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book , Avenue Q mixes sophisticated puppetry, singularly un-PC songs and edgy, laugh out loud humor. Located in an “outer-outer borough” of New York City the Avenue is modeled after the famed TV children’s puppet show… but this time for adults…jaded, anxious and confused adults!

Avenue Q is a coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. Its characters lament that as children, they were assured by their parents, and by children's television programs such as PBS's SESAME STREET, they were "special" and "could do anything". As adults, though, they have discovered to their surprise and dismay that in the real world their options are limited, and they are no more "special" than anyone else. The musical is notable for the use of puppets alongside human actors.

Not in any way is AISLE SAY a spoiler, but the language that he encountered on Broadway's AVENUE Q did not emanate from the beak of Big Bird or the hungry mouth of Cookie Monster!
