  • For the seventh consecutive summer, the Hockessin Athletic Club hosted a special event to benefit Special Olympics Delaware as part of its summer camp.
The goal of the HAC Camp Social Party on Aug. 8 was not only to provide fun activities in a carnival-like atmosphere for campers, their families and other members of the club, but to top last year's total and raise more than $5,000 for Special Olympics.
When the final person was dunked in the tank, the pizza and popcorn were devoured, the races were run, items auctioned off, and all the smiling faces painted, HAC owner Bobby Carpenter presented a check for $10,000 to Special Olympics Delaware.
"This really has become a unique fundraising event, especially with the addition of our athletes who joined the HAC campers for a festive day of fun," said Ann Grunert, Special Olympics Delaware executive director. "We are flattered to be the beneficiary and I'm overwhelmed with the amount of money that was raised, and along with it, the awareness of our organization that is created through the event. We always say that Special Olympics is about changing lives, and by hosting this event each year, the Hockessin Athletic Club helps change many."
And it wasn't just the Special Olympics athletes' lives that were changed.
"This year, our event meant so much more than just raising money for an organization," said Kelly Donaldson, HAC family social coordinator. "HAC campers got the opportunity to play, learn and experience first-hand what it takes to change lives for their new friends when Special Olympics athletes came to spend the day at camp, participating in our annual boat races. This was an invaluable lesson that our campers will never forget."
This year's donation brings the seven-year total for the fundraiser to nearly $27,000.
