A momentous event in the history of Cab Calloway School of the Arts will be observed on May 20 at 5:30 p.m., when the school will dim the lights on its old – but beloved – theatre to make way for highly anticipated renovations.
"Lights Out" will feature speakers, entertainment, and the unveiling of plans for the new theatre.
The current theatre will be gutted, and a brand new, state-of-the-art theatre is set to be completed by the fall of 2014. Residents approved financing renovations in a February 2012 referendum.
"The Cab community is thrilled about the renovations," said Julie Rumschlag, dean of the school. "We plan to note how much this space has meant, and held over the years, serving as a central gathering place not only for Cab, but for the Charter School of Wilmington and the former Wilmington High School. This much needed facelift will allow us to present performances and hold events for many years to come."
PUBLIC CAN BUY KEEPSAKE SECTIONS OF STAGE FLOOR
"Lights Out" also marks the launch of a fundraiser which allows donors to support the theatre and obtain a commemorative piece of the current stage flooring as a keepsake of the Cab Calloway School of the Arts (CCSA), Charter School of Wilmington (CSW) /Wilmington High School (WHS) Theatre!
These 6"X6" pieces will be embossed with a logo acknowledging the schools. Each piece of commemorative stage flooring from the current theatre will be sold for $50 and proceeds will benefit adding a Blackbox classroom and performance space and other extras to our new theatre to maximize its educational value for our students for years to come.
If you are unable to attend, orders can be placed on the school's website, at attached form (stage floor order form 03153b.pdf).
CONCERT AFTER CEREMONY
Immediately following "Lights Out" festivities in the lobby, a Jazz Under the Stars concert will be presented by the Varsity Jazz Band and JazzChords of Calloway.
The show is set to begin at 6 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
