  • Goldey-Beacom College catcher Alivia Schoff had two hits and drove in three runs as the Lightning softball team (11-31) celebrated Senior Day by splitting a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (12-29) at the Lightning's Jackson Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Schoff, a freshman, hails from Rising Sun High School in Colora, Md.
After losing the first game by a 6-1 margin, the Lightning ended their home schedule by scoring four unanswered runs en route to a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the second game, the Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Schoff singled home a run with two outs in the inning.
After the Hawks tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior pitcher Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.), the Lightning regained the one-run edge in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
The Lightning added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase their advantage to 5-1. After senior Ashley Antosh (Twin Valley H.S./Honey Brook, Pa.) led off the inning with a single and advanced on an UMES error, sophomore Ashley Horton (Paulsboro H.S./Paulsboro, N.J.) also reached base on a Hawk error.
With one out in the inning, junior Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) upped the Goldey-Beacom cushion to 3-1 with a single to center field. After a ground out by junior Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.), Schoff hit a single to left field that scored two runs for a four-run advantage.
From there, junior Courtney Dolson (Gloucester H.S./Gloucester, N.J.) retired six of the final seven UMES hitters to secure her third victory of the season. She scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run.
In the first game, the Hawks took advantage of a pair of Goldey-Beacom errors in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Jasmine James (BCIT Westhampton H.S./Willingboro, N.J.) drove in a run with a double down the right field line before freshman Trenece Nash (Southwest DeKalb H.S./Decatur, Ga.) upped the advantage with a ground out that scored a run.
But, the Lightning cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning when Peters scored on a double steal attempt as junior Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) advanced to second base.
After senior Belen Benitez (East Los Angeles, Calif.) opened the top of the second inning with a double to right field, she stole third base and scored on a throwing error by Schoff to give UMES a 3-1 advantage.

Gurrola held the Lightning to just one hit over the final three innings to earn her 10th win of the season.
While Schoff led the Lightning to the doubleheader split, Peters added a pair of hits while scoring three runs. Antosh, who was playing in the final home games of her college career, contributed a hit in each game while scoring a run in the Goldey-Beacom victory.
James posted four hits to lead UMES while freshman Vanessa Gomez (Belleville H.S./Belleville, N.J.) had a hit with three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
The Lightning will finish their 2013 season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Nyack College for a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games beginning at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the Hawks will begin a five-game homestand on Saturday against Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader.
