  • UPDATE: Police say suspicious suitcase left outside Newark school not harmful

  • The Delaware State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit responded to the Margaret Sterck School in Newark this morning, April 26, after a report of a suspicious suitcase outside of the school. Police investigated and said the suitcase didn't contain anything harmful; however, they encourage the public to keep reporting suspicious incidents.

  • Police determined a suspicious suitcase found unattended outside a Newark school didn't contain any harmful items.
    The Delaware State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit responded after a report about the suitcase found by a janitor at the Margaret Sterck School, 602 E. Chestnut Hill Road, at about 6:15 a.m. today, April 26.
    Police examined the suitcase and determined it to be non-explosive, containing clothing and personal items.
    At approximately 10:20 a.m. scene was declared safe.
    Police said the janitor acted responsibly by reporting the incident, and they encourage the public to become involved in the national "See Something, Say Something" Campaign. The effort urges the public to contact police if they see any suspicious activity or anything out of the ordinary, and assist by becoming "force multipliers," acting as the eyes and ears for the Delaware State Police in combating terrorism.
    The public can report suspicious activity by contacting Delaware's Anti-Terrorism Tipline 1-800-FORCE-12 (1-800-367-2312) 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    The Delaware State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit responded to the Margaret Sterck School in Newark this morning, April 26, after a report of a suspicious suitcase outside of the school.
    At approximately 6:15 a.m., police responded to the Margaret Sterk School, 602 E. Chestnut Hill Road, after a custodian discovered a suspicious suitcase that had been left outside in the rear of the school, unattended.
    The Delaware State Police EOD Unit is at the scene and is examining the suitcase and its contents.
    The school has been evacuated as a precaution and all students are safe, police said.
