New Castle County Police Traffic Services Unit continues to investigate a fatal crash that has claimed the life of one of the passengers on Centerville Road Saturday night.
The victim was identified as Anthony Maguire, a 17 year old male from the 2700 block of Skylark Road in Wilmington, NCCo County Police Cpl. John Weglarz said. He was a passenger of the 2004 Jeep Wrangler that was involved in the crash.
At 7:15 p.m. Saturday, County Police, Paramedics and emergency personnel from the Cranston Heights Fire Company, responded to the intersection of Centerville Road and East Red Clay Drive for a personal injury accident, Weglarz said. While en route, units were advised that a vehicle had overturned and there was a subject trapped inside.
When emergency units arrived, they immediately began tending to the victims at the scene, Weglarz said.
Both drivers were transported to Christian Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries and released, he said. Anthony Cicone, a 60 year old male who resides in the 2400 block of Cedar Avenue in Wilmington, was driving a green 2006 Dodge Stratus, and 17-year-old male who resides in the 2600 block of Turnstone Drive in Wilmington, was driving a silver 2004 Jeep Wrangler.
The two passengers of the Dodge Stratus, a 60-year-old and 86-year-old female from Wilmington were also transported to Christiana Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released, Weglarz said.
Maguire was unrestrained at the time of the crash and died as a result of head injuries that were sustained in the crash.
The investigation revealed that the Dodge Stratus was turning from East Red Clay Drive onto southbound Centerville Road from the intersection that is controlled by a stop sign. At the time, the Jeep Wrangler was traveling northbound on Centerville Road. The left front of the Dodge Stratus then struck the right front of the Jeep Wrangler causing the vehicle to rotate counterclockwise before coming to rest approximately 100 feet north of the intersection.
The Jeep Wrangler then went airborne after the impact and flipped several times before coming to rest on the passenger side against the curb on Centerville Road. According to investigators, alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in the crash.
