It was a close, tough, battle, but the Appoquinimink girls' soccer team stayed undefeated in the 2013 season after beating Concord HS 2-0 at home Monday afternoon. Senior midfielder Adrienne Johnson scored both goals for Appo.
Throughout the first half, Appoquinimink was repeatedly on the attack, firing numerous shots at Concord goal keeper Alexis Moore. The Lady Jaguars had about six good scoring opportunities. At least two of the shots zoomed wide past the net, and Moore made nice saves on four high percentage shots. Meanwhile, the Jags defense played a strong game, keeping the Raiders strikers away from the front of the net, and away from Jag net-minder Haley Wahrhaftig.
Appo finally got on the board near the end of the first half, when Johnson scored in the 37th minute after receiving a pass from Erica Sieban for a 1-0 lead.
Appoquinimink kept up their offensive barrage, and dominated play throughout the second half. Johnson scored her second and final goal of the game on an unassisted tally in the 76th minute. Wahrhaftig continued her strong play, stopping a breakaway by Concord. She finished with two official saves for the game.
Appoquinimink is now 8-0 on the season with the offense averaging just over four goals per game. Their next game is Wednesday at Newark HS at 7 p.m., and again on Monday afternoon against Charter School at the Hockessin Montessori School.
Concord's record dropped to 4-2. The Raiders next games are Wednesday at William Penn at 3:30 p.m., and again at home on Saturday vs. Sussex Tech at 1 p.m.
