Q What accomplishments are you most proud of during your tenure leading McKean?
A I am most proud of working with an amazing group of educators through an aggressive restructuring process to move McKean from an underperforming school to an award-winning school! Through this process I feel that we have restored "Highlander Pride" and created a breadth of amazing opportunities for our students.
Q What is the key to McKean maintaining its momentum going forward?
A McKean is a special place because of the dedicated professionals committed to our students. The continued success of McKean will be to stay the course and ensure the "right people" continue to do the "right work" in this family oriented community. In the last year, [Red Clay Superintendent] Dr. Mervin Daugherty has made significant investments in McKean through the upgrade of our career and technical education facilities. These facilities will allow our students to have access to industry standard tools to ensure their college and career readiness.
Q Why did you accept the challenge of leading the high school component of Newark Charter School?
A It was a very difficult decision to leave Red Clay Consolidated School District and McKean. I had envisioned spending the remainder of my career in the district because of the high quality professionals I have worked with and because of the systemic strength. The prospect of opening Newark Charter Jr./Sr. High School provides a unique opportunity for me to utilize my skills while facing new challenges in the community where I live. NCS's tradition of success is one I look forward to continuing.
Page 2 of 2 - Q Do you have mixed feelings about leaving?
A Anytime you make a place your "home" and then choose to leave you have a catharsis of feelings. Being a Highlander is an important part of my journey and one I will cherish. I will miss my students, families, colleagues and friends. At the same time, I find the new challenges ahead at Newark Charter to be exhilarating.
