The Red Clay Board of Education voted unanimously to name the new elementary school to be built off Graves Road after longtime Red Clay educator William 'Buzzy' Cooke toward the end of its monthly meeting held Wednesday at Warner Elementary School.
The new school in Hockessin now bears the name William Cooke Jr. Elementary School thanks to the board action.
Cook, who was known for his personable style as an educator, spent the last 10 years of his career as principal of the popular Brandywine Springs School, a very hard school to choice into. The name William Cooke Jr. Elementary School beat out two others that fit the criteria set out by the committee – Alice Coleman Elementary and Piedmont Elementary, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Ted Amman had said. Two more names did not make the cut – Joe Biden Elementary, and Graves Road Elementary, he said.
The audience of Red Clay administrators, teachers, parents and school board candidates applauded the board's 7-0 vote.
