Wilmington University sophomore pitcher Chelsea Botsch (Smyrna H.S.) and senior pitcher Katie Warrington (Red Lion Christian Academy) combined to allow just one earned run while recording 20 strikeouts as Wilmington University (16-14, 3-3) upped its win streak to four straight games with a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victories over Goldey-Beacom College (9-13, 5-5) at the Wildcats' Asbury Field.
After Botsch led the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory in the first game on Tuesday afternoon, Warrington helped Wilmington earn the sweep with a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap.
The Wildcats took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game. After freshmen Cambria Ziemba (St. Mark's H.S./Wilmington, Del.) and Brook Ash (Indian River H.S./Millsboro, Del.) opened the inning with back-to-back singles, junior Christin Headley (Sussex Central H.S./Georgetown, Del.) gave Wilmington a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout.
With two outs in the inning, the Wildcats upped the lead to 3-0 on a fielding error by sophomore Alexa Houston (Sussex Central H.S./Georgetown, Del.) that allowed both Ash and senior Brooke Berger (Ridley H.S./Ridley Park, Pa.) to score.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Lightning trimmed the margin to 3-1 on an RBI double by sophomore Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.). However, Botsch retired the final 11 hitters she faced to secure the victory for the Wildcats.
Botsch, who improved to 5-6 on the season, allowed just one earned run on three hits while striking out seven batters. She did not walk a batter and faced just four batters over the minimum.
The Lightning claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning in the nightcap after junior outfielder Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) scored on a passed ball.
But, the Wildcats answered in the bottom of the fifth inning as Botsch scored an unearned run after a throwing error by Alonzo with two outs, tying the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, senior Skye Boris (Caesar Rodney H.S./Magnolia, Del.) doubled to right center field before being replaced by freshman Emily Nowell (St. Mark's H.S./Wilmington, Del.). After a groundout moved Nowell to third base with two outs, she scored the game-winning run after freshman Rice Fazio (Shawnee H.S./Medford, N.J.) reached on a fielding error by Alonzo.
The win capped a solid performance by Warrington, who struck out 13 hitters without walking a batter. The CACC leader with 127 strikeouts, she earned her league-leading ninth win of the season and has earned three consecutive wins.
Foster led the Lightning offense with two hits while Alonzo and junior utility player Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) each contributed a hit.
