  • Goldey-Beacom's Ewing honored as CACC rookie of the week

  • Freshman designated player Taylor Ewing of Goldey-Beacom has been named as the recipient of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Rookie of the Week award for the week ending Mar. 17, CACC officials said.
    In addition, sophomore utility player Samantha Alonzo was named as an honorable mention selection for the CACC Player of the Week award.
    Honored as the CACC Rookie of the Week for the first time in her career, Ewing (North Dorchester H.S./Hurlock, Md.) led the Lightning to four consecutive wins the week before her honor, including a pair of CACC victories over Felician. In four games, she hit .545 with six hits, including three doubles and a triple. She tallied at least one hit in all four games as the Lightning exploded for 39 runs on 43 hits.
    In the Lightning's doubleheader sweep over Lincoln on Wednesday afternoon, Ewing had four hits and drove in four runs as Goldey-Beacom defeated the Lions by scores of 14-1 and 9-1. In the second game, she had a season-high three hits, including a pair of doubles, while driving in two runs.
    After going 1-for-2 in the Lightning's 8-5 victory over Felician on Sunday afternoon, Ewing helped Goldey-Beacom rally to post an 8-7 win in the nightcap by driving in three runs along with a double.
    The Lightning's leading hitter with a .400 average this season, Ewing has played in 11 games while making 10 starts. She is also tied for the team lead with four doubles and eight runs batted in. She also leads the Lightning with a .640 slugging percentage.
    Meanwhile, Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) had a record-setting week for the Lightning after recording three triples among her seven hits, giving her a school-record four triples this year. She posted a pair of three-hit efforts in the second game against Lincoln and the first game against Felician. In addition, she drove in six runs while scoring seven times.
    A starter in all 12 games this season for the Lightning, Alonzo ranks fifth on the team with a .316 average and leads the team with seven extra-base hits. She has hit safely in four of her last five games.
    Ewing and Alonzo's work helped improve the Lighting to 5-7 overall and 2-0 in the CACC.
