  • Troopers are investigating a robbery of the Wawa at 531 East Basin Road near New Castle early Sunday morning, and they are also searching for two suspects who stole cigarettes from the Wawa at 4601 Ogletown Stanton Road in Newark Saturday morning and then threatened a customer who witnessed the crime.
The incident at the Wawa in New Castle occurred at 1:51 a.m. Sunday when a white male suspect wearing a mask entered the New Castle County store, Delaware State Police Cpl. John Day said. He kept one hand in his jacket pocket and used the other to gesture towards the cash register.
A store employee removed cash from the register and turned the cash over to the suspect, who fled on foot, Day said.
He said the suspect in New Castle was described as a 5-foot-6 white male with a large build, wearing a mask and black jacket. No further physical or clothing description was available, and there was no video surveillance available for release.
As for the incident Saturday morning near Newark, a white male and a black male loitered around the cash registers of the store of Stanton-Ogletown Road, Day said. When no one was around them, the black male suspect reached over the sales counter and stole three packages of cigarettes, he said.
Both suspects then began to run out of the store, and the white male suspect ran into a 57-year-old Newark man who was entering the store, pushing the man aside, Day said. The two suspects then ran from the store.
The 57-year-old man realized the suspects had just stolen from the store and returned to his truck in order to follow the suspects, Days said. He caught up to them on Brownleaf Road in the Hillside Heights Development.
As the man chastised the suspects for stealing, the white male suspect removed a baseball bat from the bed of the man's truck and smashed the truck's side view mirror. The white male suspect then threatened the man with the bat, and both suspects fled on foot.
