The seasonal opening of Woodside Creamery in Hockessin was something Martha Ploener had been waiting months for.
Saturday's opening came and Ploener, of Hockessin, was there with her son, Josh Ploener to enjoy their first Woodside ice cream of the year.
"You can't get any better ice cream than this," she said.
They ate their ice cream at one of Woodside Creamery's picnic tables under a sunny, albeit chilly day.
The unseasonably cool temperatures could not stop crowds of people waiting in long yet fast moving lines at Woodside Creamery's opening Saturday.
Among those there for the grand opening was 7-year-old son, Danford, who celebrated his birthday Saturday at Woodside Creamery with parents Allyson and Mark Mason, of Wilmington, and his sister Henley Mason, 8, along friends Kyle Immediato and Conrad Murphy, both 6 of Hockessin and Olivia Fennimore and Isabel Fennimore, 6, both of Wilmington.
"We were hoping it would be nice," Allyson Mason said. "It's a little windy but it's a beautiful day."
All of the children decided to try the dirt flavor, a variation of chocolate ice cream.
There was also a contingent from All Saints Catholic School at Woodside, including Dave Stetler and his sons Colin and Hadyn, Michelle Nardozzi, Edison Pard and Jonathan Wade. The school was celebrating the medals it won Saturday morning at the 36th Annual Catholic and Private Elementary School Science Olympiad held at nearby St. Mark's High School Saturday.
"It's a big day," Nardozzi said. "It's a celebration for us."
