A woman's home off the 800 block of Marsh Road in northern New Castle County was burglarized Sunday by a man who claimed to be an employee of a water company and his unseen accomplice.
The incident occurred at 5 p.m. Sunday when the 82-year-old female victim was home alone at her Brandywine Hundred residence and heard someone knocking at her front door, Delaware State Police Cpl. John Day said. The victim answered the door and was greeted by a white male who claimed to be from the "water company," and was working in the area on contaminated water lines, he said.
The suspect stated he needed to access the victim's basement and asked her to join him, Day said. After the male left the residence, the victim realized property had been removed from within the residence while she was in the basement with the suspect.
The Delaware State Police would like to remind homeowners to remain vigilant and to ask for identification before allowing any unexpected worker to enter your home. If a worker is unable to produce valid identification, do not allow that person access to your home.
The Delaware State Police is asking anyone who may have any information in reference to this incident to contact the Det. Terranova at Troop 2 at 302-834-2630 extension 209.
