The State Tournament ride for the Lady Spartans is over, as they fell to #3 Caravel 62-33 in the State Quarterfinals on Thursday.

St. Mark’s came out flat with an ice-cold offense which would haunt them the rest of the game as they were never able to recover.

Caravel had a 14-0 lead before St. Mark’s score a basket and trailed going into the second quarter, 23-6. The unfortunate start for St. Mark’s played right in the Cavaliers hands as they continued to push the ball while forcing turnovers from a desperate Spartans team.

St. Mark’s was able to compose themselves in the second quarter holding Caravel to only 10 points while scoring 8 of their own. While it was improvement, the Cavaliers were slowing the pace and carefully running their offense while making every possession difficult on the other end.

At the half, Caravel led 33-14.

The Spartans would continue to play better defense in the second half, but had difficulty putting together any sort of steady offense behind a tough Caravel defense.

After three quarters, Caravel led 44-22.

St. Mark’s would attempt one more run in the fourth, but Caravel simply turned up the pressure on offense outscoring the Spartans 18-11 to preserve the 62-33 win.

Sophomore Claire Igo led the way for St. Mark’s finishing with 9 points, while Cassidy Flanigan and Jenna Wolff combined for 14 in the loss.
