  • A tough second period cost Middletown an opportunity for a second straight win in the DIAA boys state basketball tournament in a resounding 81-62 loss to Howard School of Technology Saturday afternoon in a game played at Salesianum High School in Wilmington.
"We had one really bad period, the second period, and that was what cost us the game," said Cavalier coach Jasen Maciey.
The game was even at 16 after the first period, as Joe Bamfo and Sardayah Sambo hit some shots to keep Middletown equal to Howard. Then came the disastrous second period when the Cavs were outscored 21-2.
"We just didn't do anything right," said Maciey.
Middletown actually played a good game in the second half, with both teams scoring 44 points. "We played them even for three quarters, but we just didn't get the job done in that second quarter," said Maciey.
The Cavaliers advanced to the second round of the tournament after defeating Mount Pleasant Wednesday night 53-48.
Maciey conceded his team didn't play great in that game either. "We didn't play out brand of basketball. We had a lead, let them back into the game, but we made a few shots at the end to hold on to the game," he said.
